A night on Deal pier
An ordinary evening walk, and the most extraordinary sky.

Nothing special was meant to happen that night, and then I looked up. I walked out onto Deal pier as the tide came in, and the water was higher and wilder than I'd ever seen it, rushing brown and silver beneath the boards. Behind me the seafront glowed, every window lit up, and the lamps along the pier threw long shadows across the water.

At the very end, everything went quiet. The moon broke through the clouds, a soft halo around it, and laid a pale path across the sea all the way to the horizon.

It's moments like this I come back to when I'm choosing pieces for Coventina: the colours of the sea at night, the cosy glow of home across the water. An ordinary evening walk, and the most extraordinary sky.
