The Little Dragons

Dragon Fruit

Selenicereus species

Meet the Little Dragons, an unexpectedly large family of dragon fruit seedlings grown from the seeds of a single fruit. What began as a little experiment soon became a crowded nursery, with dozens of tiny plants and their first delicate spines.

A rather unexpected beginning

It began with a dragon fruit and a simple thought: I wonder whether these seeds will grow?

I planted quite a few, thinking that if just one or two germinated, it would be a lovely little success.

But the seeds had other ideas.

Instead of one or two, dozens of tiny green seedlings appeared, crowding together in their pot, each apparently determined not to be left behind.

By early November, some were already developing their first delicate white spines, the earliest signs of the climbing cacti they may one day become.

On 6 November 2026, the crowded seedlings were carefully divided into small groups and given more room in a half seed tray.

For now, they'll remain together as the Little Dragons. There will be time enough for individual names when we discover how they grow.
